Description: When
several professional trainers told 14 year-old Alisa
Bernhard that two year-old Fleetstreet Max would “never make
an all-around horse,” she refused to believe that the flashy
sorrel American Paint Horse gelding she and her mother Susan
had bred and raised at home, was not destined for more. She
was right. At the 2008 American Paint Horse Association
World Show in Fort Worth, Texas, destiny led Alisa and Max
to rewrite the single horse lifetime
APHA record for most
world championships (18), formerly held by sorrel overo
mare, Too Sexy Formyspot, and set a new record,
for 21 world titles. In just seven years of showing, the
Paint horse once dismissed as an underwhelming two year-old
had, by age 11, become the greatest world champion in breed
history and his teenaged trainer had proven his versatility
in seven vastly different events – Equitation Over Fences,
Hunter Hack, Hunt Seat Equitation, Working Hunter, Western
Horsemanship, Western Riding, and Trail – as well as earning
seven reserve world championships, five APHA World Show
All-Around awards, four trophy horse trailers, two Breeder’s
Trust highest money-earner titles, and more than 8,500
points in a dozen events ranging from halterto reining. As a
teenager, Alisa had taken the reins on training Max herself,
and he had rewarded her faith in him by winning his first
world championship by age five, and then, at the 2006 APHA
World Show, winning seven world championships and becoming
the first Paint horse ever to win both the All-Around
Amateur and All-Around Open Horse titles. Going into the
2008 World show, he needed two titles to tie the record, and
three to rewrite Paint horse show history. A nail-biting tie
for the record came with a victory in Amateur Hunter Hack
and then history was theirs with a decisive win as defending
champions in Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation. Back home in
Germantown, Wisconsin, as Alisa turns professional (now 25
years old), Max is enjoying a more leisurely routine. But
don’t discount this dynamic duo just yet. “He definitely has
many years of showing left,” Alisa said.
